What's O.L.D. is N.E.W. (W.O.I.N.) is the system powering three gorgeous, crunchy, compatible roleplaying games - medieval fantasy, 80s action heroes, and far-future science fiction. These games are called O.L.D., N.O.W., and N.E.W., respectively and are all open (as in open gaming content) and entirely compatible with each other. Designed from the start as a toolkit oriented game system, you are encouraged to design your own content using the extensive guidelines found in each book.

Bounty hunters track down outlaws hiding in trader towns on worlds at the fringe of the galaxy. Starships explore unknown worlds, going where nobody has gone before. Great generational arks seek somewhere to call home. Detectives investigate a murder on a trail which will take them from Mars to Jupiter's moons. Agents infiltrate a criminal organization, going undercover to take down a galactic crime boss. A group of smugglers locates a new hyperdrive system to increase the speed of their freighter.

Play a brave starship captain, a reckless smuggler, a hardy marine, or a daredevil pilot. Are you a cunning bounty hunter, a clever engineer, or a charismatic trader? Over sixty science fiction careers await you!

The N.E.W. Science-Fiction Roleplaying Game includes more than 300 pages of rules and content that allows you to create and run adventures in any sci-fi setting!

Features:

  • The W.O.I.N. rules use a life-path system for character generation, d6 dice pools for task resolution, a freeform verb-noun magic system, and hex-based starship combat rules influenced by the best that the 1980s had to offer but updated to modern sensibilities.
  • Full rules for the running the game and extensive guidelines for building a far-future game setting.
  • Comprehensive starship construction rules, space combat, sci-fi equipment, and cybernetics in a rules-crunchy tactical roleplaying game.
  • A range of alien species, and over 60 careers which allow you to generate any far-future character you can imagine.
  • Rather than including a setting itself, N.E.W. is very much pitched as a toolkit full of rules and guidelines which help you create your own setting or model your favourite TV, movie, or book setting. To that end, a full quarter of the book is devoted to world (universe) building.
  • Tactical but fast combat rules ensure that every player character is engaged in the encounter, whether you are commanding a great exploration starship or a small, nimble freighter.

Hannah ★★★★★

I was impressed by how the career system lets you build exactly the sci-fi character you want, from a stealthy spy to a starship engineer. The 3d6 dice pool mechanics feel intuitive once you get rolling, and the gear section has tons of fun options. Only wish the core book included a full sample adv

Benjamin P. ★★★★★

The dice pool system for skill checks feels really tactical without being bogged down, and I love how seamlessly the three different game settings integrate. Chargen took a couple of hours but the payoff in customization is absolutely worth it.

Olivia D. ★★★★★

The character creation options are incredibly detailed, letting me build exactly the cybernetic smuggler I envisioned. Rolling up a new character took a good hour, but every choice felt meaningful for the far-future setting.
