Compare the Starforged Deluxe Edition Rulebook and the Sundered Isles Asset Deck: one gives you the complete solo RPG, the other adds 61 seafaring assets. See which to buy first.
Quick answer
Buy the Ironsworn: Starforged Deluxe Edition Rulebook first if you do not yet own Starforged—it is the standalone game you need to play. Choose the Sundered Isles Asset Deck only after you have the core rules and want 61 seafaring character assets to expand or reskin your campaigns.
Why these two products are not interchangeable
The Deluxe Edition Rulebook is the complete standalone follow-up to Ironsworn; no prior Ironsworn experience is required. The Sundered Isles Asset Deck is a deck of 61 poker-sized cards that supplies character assets for the seafaring Sundered Isles setting, many of which also work in spacefaring Starforged campaigns. One teaches you how to play; the other gives you more options once you are already playing.
That difference matters for budgeting and table space. A rulebook is read, referenced, and passed around; an asset deck is shuffled, dealt, and written on. If you are starting from zero, the deck alone will not give you the moves, oracles, or vow structure you need to run a session.
The trade-off: depth versus breadth
The Deluxe Edition gives you the full Starforged experience—exploring uncharted space, swearing iron vows, and building bonds—but it does not add the Sundered Isles setting or its seafaring assets. The Asset Deck gives you a wide mix of new character options and dry-erase-friendly cards, but it assumes you already have a Starforged or Ironsworn game to attach them to.
In practice, the rulebook is the higher-priority purchase for a new player, while the asset deck is the better purchase for an existing player who wants fresh mechanical choices without buying another full rulebook.
Decision rules for buying one or both
- You own no Starforged material: Start with the Deluxe Edition Rulebook. It contains the standalone game you need to create characters, swear vows, and run sessions. Do not buy the asset deck first; it does not replace the core rules.
- You already play Starforged and want more character options: Add the Sundered Isles Asset Deck. Its 61 assets are built for the seafaring setting, and many also work in spacefaring campaigns, so you can mix and match. Check whether your table prefers physical cards over printed sheets before buying.
- You want the seafaring setting specifically: The asset deck supplies seafaring character assets, but it is not a standalone setting book. You still need Starforged or Ironsworn to play. Pair the deck with the Deluxe Edition Rulebook if you are new to the system.
