Learn how to start Joe Dever's Freeway Warrior gamebook series, including the correct reading order, how the solo adventure works, and tips for new players.
Quick Answer
Start with Freeway Warrior 1 - Highway Holocaust, then continue in numerical order through the four books. Each book is a standalone solo adventure, but reading them in order follows the story of Cal Phoenix from the ruins of Dallas to the California coast.
Why Reading Order Matters
Although each Freeway Warrior book can be played on its own, the series follows a continuous narrative. Starting with Freeway Warrior 1 - Highway Holocaust introduces you to the world and your character, Cal Phoenix, before the stakes escalate in later books. Playing in order also lets you carry over choices and consequences, which adds depth to the experience.
What to Expect from a Solo Adventure
Freeway Warrior is a choose-your-own-adventure gamebook, meaning you read sections and make decisions that determine the path. You'll manage resources, fight enemies, and face random events. Unlike traditional RPGs, there's no need for a game master or other players—it's designed for solo play. The books include rules for combat and character progression, so you'll need a pencil and eraser to track your stats.
How to Start Your Freeway Warrior Adventure
- Start with Book 1: Highway Holocaust: Purchase Freeway Warrior 1 - Highway Holocaust and read the rules section carefully. This book introduces the setting, your character, and the basic mechanics. Don't skip ahead—the rules are essential for later books. Make sure you understand the combat system before you begin playing.
- Track Your Character Sheet: Use a pencil and paper to record your stats, equipment, and inventory as you play. Many gamebooks require you to track these across multiple sessions. A common mistake is forgetting to update your character sheet after a battle or item use. Always double-check your stats after each encounter to avoid errors.
- Follow the Numbered Sections: When you make a choice, you'll be directed to a numbered paragraph. Turn to that section and read it. Do not read ahead—this spoils the adventure and can lead to confusion. Resist the urge to peek; it ruins the surprise and can break the game's logic.
- Continue in Numerical Order: After finishing Book 1, proceed to Freeway Warrior 2 - Slaughter Mountain Run, then Book 3, and finally Book 4 - California Countdown. Playing them in order ensures the story flows naturally and your character's journey makes sense. If you skip a book, you'll miss key plot developments that enhance the finale.
Key Books in the Series
- Freeway Warrior 1 - Highway Holocaust: This is the first choose-your-own-adventure-gamebook in Joe Dever's post-apocalyptic series, set in America 2033 AD after a nuclear nightmare. It's the perfect starting point to learn the rules and meet your character before the journey intensifies.
Freeway Warrior 1 - Highway Holocaust - Freeway Warrior 2 - Slaughter Mountain Run: The second book in the series continues the story, following the same setting and character as the first. Reading it after the first book maintains narrative continuity and lets you carry over your choices.
Freeway Warrior 2 - Slaughter Mountain Run - Freeway Warrior 4 - California Countdown: The final book in the series, where you face the last stage of the exodus to the California coast, fraught with dangers. It's the climactic conclusion, so playing the earlier books first makes the finale more rewarding.
