Deciding between the Fabula Ultima Core Rulebook and the Atlas: High Fantasy? This comparison breaks down the tradeoffs so you know which book suits your JRPG tabletop RPG group.
Quick answer
If you are new to the game, start with the Fabula Ultima Core Rulebook. If you already own the core rules and want to expand your JRPG-inspired world with high fantasy tropes, pick up the Fabula Ultima Atlas: High Fantasy.
The Core Rulebook is your foundation
The Fabula Ultima Core Rulebook provides everything you need to play: character creation, combat rules, magic, and guidance for building your own fantasy world. It is inspired by Japanese-style console RPGs (JRPGs), so you and your friends will tell epic stories of heroes, villains, and bizarre monsters. Without this book, you cannot run the game at all.
The Atlas is a campaign toolkit, not a standalone game
The Fabula Ultima Atlas: High Fantasy expands your existing Fabula Ultima games with high fantasy themes: ancient mysteries, powerful beings, and legendary quests. It adds setting material, adventure hooks, and optional rules but does not replace the core rulebook. If you buy only the Atlas, you will lack the basic rules needed to play.
Trade-off: depth vs. breadth
The Core Rulebook offers broad, essential rules for any campaign, while the Atlas focuses on deepening one specific genre (high fantasy). If your group prefers a different genre—like dark fantasy or sci-fi—the Atlas might not suit you. Conversely, if you love high fantasy and want pre-built lore, the Atlas saves you prep time.
Which book should you buy first?
- Start with the Core Rulebook if...: You are new to Fabula Ultima or need the full rules for character creation, combat, and magic. This is the only book that lets you play the game. Check your group's interest in JRPG-style storytelling before buying.
- Add the Atlas if...: You already own the Core Rulebook and want to run a high fantasy campaign with pre-built lore, ancient mysteries, and legendary beings. The Atlas enriches your game but does not replace the core rules. Ensure your group enjoys high fantasy tropes; otherwise, the Atlas may collect dust.
- Buy both together if...: You are committed to running a long-term high fantasy campaign and want a complete foundation plus expanded content from the start. This saves shipping costs and gives you a richer experience immediately. Consider your budget: the Core Rulebook is already a complete game, and the Atlas is a luxury add-on.
